The Glorious Qur’an
Chapter 2
The Cow (Al-Baqarah) in 286 verses

In the name of Allah, (Who’s) the most Merciful Bountiful
1. الم
2. ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لاَ رَيْبَ فِيهِ هُدًى لِّلْمُتَّقِينَ
{1}: A, L, M. [alif Laam Meem]*.
{2}: This is the Book which there is no doubt about; [it is] a guideline for the pious.
3. الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلاةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
{3}: [The pious are] those who believe in the Unseen, keep up prayer, and pay out [for charities] of whatever [wealth, knowledge, and help] We have provided for them.
4. والَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنزِلَ مِن قَبْلِكَ وَبِالآخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ
{4}: And those who believe in what has been sent down to you, (Prophet,) as well what was sent down (to the prophets) before you – and are certain about the Hereafter;
5. أُوْلَـئِكَ عَلَى هُدًى مِّن رَّبِّهِمْ وَأُوْلَـئِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
{5}: such [pious] are on guidance by their Lord, and they are the successful ones.
6. إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَأَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ
{6}: (O Prophet,) in fact, it is the same for the faith-rejecters, whether you warn them or do not warn them, they will not believe.
7. خَتَمَ اللّهُ عَلَى قُلُوبِهمْ وَعَلَى سَمْعِهِمْ وَعَلَى أَبْصَارِهِمْ غِشَاوَةٌ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عظِيمٌ
{7}: [Due to their disbelief and arrogance,] Allah Glory to Him in the highest has sealed off their hearts and their hearing, there is still a covering over their eyesight and there waits great punishment for them.
8. وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
{8}: And there are some among the people who say: “We believe in Allah Glory to Him in the highest and the Last Day,” but [in fact,] they are not believers.
9. يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلاَّ أَنفُسَهُم وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ
{9}: [In their imagination,] they deceive Allah Glory to Him in the highest and the believers, [as well as the Prophet Peace be upon him,] yet they deceive none but themselves, though they do not realize it!
10. فِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللّهُ مَرَضاً وَلَهُم عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ
{10}: [Due to their jealousy toward the righteous,] malice has settled in their hearts, and Allah Glory to Him in the highest has added to their malice; there will be a painful punishment for them [in the Hereafter] for they have been lying.
11. وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لاَ تُفْسِدُواْ فِي الأَرْضِ قَالُواْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ
{11}: And whenever they are told not to make mischief on the earth, they say: “We are just the peace makers [among people]!”
12. أَلا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَـكِن لاَّ يَشْعُرُونَ
{12}: O, behold! They are indeed the mischief-makers, but they do not realize it!
13. وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُواْ كَمَا آمَنَ النَّاسُ قَالُواْ أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَا آمَنَ السُّفَهَاء أَلا إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهَاء وَلَـكِن لاَّ يَعْلَمُونَ
{13}: And when they are told: “Believe [in Allah and the Hereafter] just as other people believe,” they say: “Are we to believe just as the simple-minded believe?” O, behold! They themselves are the simple-minded, but they cannot perceive!
14. وَإِذَا لَقُواْ الَّذِينَ آمَنُواْ قَالُواْ آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْاْ إِلَى شَيَاطِينِهِمْ قَالُواْ إِنَّا مَعَكْمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِؤُونَ
{14}: And when [the hypocrites] meet those who believe, they say: “We also believe,” but when they are away with their own devil companions, they say: “In fact, we are with you, but we are just mocking [the believers].”
15. اللّهُ يَسْتَهْزِىءُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
{15}: [It is] Allah Glory to Him in the highest Who mocks at them and lets them carry on their evil acts blindly in confusion.
16. أُوْلَـئِكَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرُوُاْ الضَّلاَلَةَ بِالْهُدَى فَمَا رَبِحَت تِّجَارَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُواْ مُهْتَدِينَ
{16}: They are the ones who have purchased error at the price of guidance, so their dealing does not profit them, nor will they be guided aright.
17. مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ الَّذِي اسْتَوْقَدَ نَاراً فَلَمَّا أَضَاءتْ مَا حَوْلَهُ ذَهَبَ اللّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِي ظُلُمَاتٍ لاَّ يُبْصِرُونَ
18. صُمٌّ بُكْمٌ عُمْيٌ فَهُمْ لاَ يَرْجِعُونَ
{17}: Their similarity may be compared to one who kindled a fire, but when it lighted around him [and his companions]; Allah Glory to Him in the highest took their light away and left them in pitch darkness so that they could not see [anything].
{18}: [They are so confused that as if they were] deaf, dumb, and blind and they can never return [to the right path]!
19. أَوْ كَصَيِّبٍ مِّنَ السَّمَاء فِيهِ ظُلُمَاتٌ وَرَعْدٌ وَبَرْقٌ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصْابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِم مِّنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ واللّهُ مُحِيطٌ بِالْكافِرِينَ
{19}: Or [their similarity is compared to some people who are entrapped in] a rain-cloud from the sky containing darkness, thunder and lightening; they thrust their fingers into their ears to avoid [hearing the message of] the death by the thunderclaps; [but they should know that] Allah Glory to Him in the highest dominates the disbelievers.
20. يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ كُلَّمَا أَضَاء لَهُم مَّشَوْاْ فِيهِ وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُواْ وَلَوْ شَاء اللّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّه عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
21. يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ اعْبُدُواْ رَبَّكُمُ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ
{20}: (The dazzling) lightening almost snatches their eyesight away. When it lights up things for them, they walk along in its light, but when the darkness settles on their way, they stand still. Had Allah Glory to Him in the highest desired, He would have taken away their hearing and eyesight, (for) indeed Allah Glory to Him in the highest is Capable of [doing] everything.
{21}: O mankind! Worship your Creator -Nurturer Lord Who created you and those before you, so that [through sincere prayers] they may become heedful of Him.
22. الَّذِي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرْضَ فِرَاشاً وَالسَّمَاء بِنَاء وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّمَاء مَاء فَأَخْرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَرَاتِ رِزْقاً لَّكُمْ فَلاَ تَجْعَلُواْ لِلّهِ أَندَاداً وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ
23. وَإِن كُنتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِّمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُواْ بِسُورَةٍ مِّن مِّثْلِهِ وَادْعُواْ شُهَدَاءكُم مِّن دُونِ اللّهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ
24. فَإِن لَّمْ تَفْعَلُواْ وَلَن تَفْعَلُواْ فَاتَّقُواْ النَّارَ الَّتِي وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَافِرِينَ
{22}: [Your Allah is the One] Who made the earth [like a vast] carpet for you [to rest on] and raised the sky above you [as a ceiling,] and sent down water from the sky, then brought forth fruit for your sustenance! So do not set up partners to Allah Glory to Him in the highest while you know [those partners you take for gods are unable to create anything].
{23}: And if you are in doubt about what We have sent to Our sincere worshipper (Muhammad) then, if you are so truthful, bring a chapter like that and call your witnesses besides Allah Glory to Him in the highest [to witness it]!
{24}: But if you cannot do so, [and undoubtedly] you can’t do so, then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones* which has been prepared for [the punishment of] the disbelievers!

* Idolaters and their deities
25. وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِين آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ كُلَّمَا رُزِقُواْ مِنْهَا مِن ثَمَرَةٍ رِّزْقاً قَالُواْ هَـذَا الَّذِي رُزِقْنَا مِن قَبْلُ وَأُتُواْ بِهِ مُتَشَابِهاً وَلَهُمْ فِيهَا أَزْوَاجٌ مُّطَهَّرَةٌ وَهُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ
{25}: (O Prophet,) give good news to those who believe and do good and decent deeds that there are gardens (in paradise) for them where rivers flow through the lower parts of them. Whenever they are given fruits from there for their sustenance, they say: “These are just what we were given before!” They will be given similar things, and there will be clean chaste mates for them [as companions] – they will remain therein [forever].
